How it's made

Drawn from the
real animal.

The same hand-drawn look across the whole collection — verified against the real species, animal by animal.

Before an animal becomes part of a printable, it begins with paper, pencil and careful observation.

Every illustration begins with close observation of the real species. Shape, posture, markings and expression are developed individually, rather than assembled from a standard template.

The result is a softer, more natural image with the small irregularities and visible texture that give hand-drawn work its character.

Questions

Often
asked.

  • Mother hippos keep their calves close in the water and will position themselves between the calf and potential threats such as crocodiles or rival hippos. Calves often rest on their mother's back when the water is too deep for them to stand, keeping them safe and allowing easy access to breathe.

  • Hippo calves can swim and dive within days of birth, instinctively holding their breath, though their stamina underwater builds gradually over the following months as their lungs and muscles develop. Young calves often practise short dives near their mothers before venturing further on their own.

  • A hippo calf typically stays close to its mother for around a year, during which time she actively defends it from other hippos, and especially aggressive males within the pod. This protective period is critical, since young hippos are among the more vulnerable members of a pod despite the adults' formidable size.
